Apple TV Announces 'The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina' Culinary Series

Apple TV has announced "The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina," a new eight-episode unscripted food series starring and executive produced by Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Awkwafina. The show follows the actor and comedian on a cross-country journey to explore Asian American cuisine and reconnect with her family's cooking heritage.



The series centers on Nora Lum's personal history with food. While her family operated Lum's, an iconic Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York, Lum herself never learned to cook. The show will document her attempts to master Asian dishes in the kitchen with help from acclaimed chefs, restaurateurs, and her own family members.


"I've never been trusted around a kitchen, so I thank everyone involved for opening that part of my house up to me," said Awkwafina. "Food has been a huge part of my family's history, and to be able to explore and reconnect with that legacy has been an incredibly rare and very special opportunity."

Produced for Apple by Twofour, the series marks the second collaboration between the production company and the streaming service. Twofour previously produced The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, which is currently heading into its third season. Executive producers for the new series include Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss, and Caroline Davies.

The announcement adds to the growing slate of unscripted originals on the service, which was recently rebranded from Apple TV+ to Apple TV. No release date for the series has been provided yet.
