Samsung plans to produce approximately one million units of its unreleased "Wide Fold" smartphone this year, according to a new report from ETNews. The volume would mark Samsung's largest production run for a special edition foldable in the past three years, underscoring Samsung's confidence in expanding the foldable form factor beyond niche releases.
The report claims the upcoming foldable will feature a 7.6-inch internal OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This results in a squarer, more tablet-like layout when unfolded, distinct from the taller 18:20 ratio used by Samsung's standard Galaxy Z Fold lineup. The external display is said to measure 5.4 inches. The design aligns with earlier reports from December that Samsung was developing a wide foldable device with a form factor similar to Apple's rumored approach.
The reported production volume would represent a notable shift in strategy. For comparison, shipments of last year's Galaxy Z Fold SE were estimated at around 500,000 units, while the experimental Galaxy Z TriFold saw a limited run of roughly 30,000 units. Samsung is also expected to adjust its release schedule, with the Wide Fold launching in the third quarter alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8, rather than being introduced separately to avoid cannibalizing its mainline foldables.
The timing and design choices are widely viewed within the supply chain as an effort to establish the wide 4:3 foldable format ahead of Apple's long-rumored entry into the category. Apple is expected to debut its first foldable iPhone later this year, with reports suggesting it will also feature a 4:3 internal display.
Supply chain leaks indicate Apple has secured a "crease-free" 7.8-inch internal display and may rely on side-mounted Touch ID to maintain a thinner chassis. Analysts continue to project significantly higher shipment volumes for Apple's debut foldable, with forecasts hovering around 10 million units. The device is also expected to share premium specifications with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, including the A20 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM.
