Apple Watch Ultra 4 raises normal-use battery life from up to 42 to 50 hours and adds a new Health Sensing System powered by the S11 chip. Those are the clearest reasons to consider it over Ultra 3, which already offered satellite connectivity and much of the same outdoor hardware.
The new model keeps the 49mm titanium design, 3000-nit display, and $799 U.S. starting price. For an Ultra 3 owner, battery life and recovery tracking are the changes most likely to matter in daily use.
Apple rates Ultra 4 for eight more hours of normal use than Ultra 3. Low Power Mode also rises from up to 72 to 84 hours. Actual endurance varies with use, settings, and cellular reception.
For someone who already finishes trips or long days comfortably on Ultra 3, the extra margin may not change much. It matters more if you regularly approach an empty battery or want additional flexibility around overnight wear and charging.
Apple lists up to 18 hours of outdoor workout use for Ultra 4. Extended Workout raises that to 25 hours using Low Power Mode, with running-form metrics unavailable. Max Extended Workout is rated for up to 45 hours; it also turns off alerts and splits, with some metrics unavailable.
Short charges go further on Ultra 4. A 15-minute charge is rated to provide up to 18 hours of normal use, compared with 12 hours on Ultra 3. Five minutes supplies up to 10 hours of sleep tracking instead of eight. Both generations still take about 45 minutes to reach an 80 percent charge.
New Sensors Focus on Recovery
Ultra 4 adds the same new Health Sensing System introduced with Apple Watch Series 12. It includes a third-generation electrical heart sensor and an always-on optical sensor. Apple says heart rate is measured every five seconds and heart rate variability (HRV) is captured up to 24 times more frequently.
The Readiness app combines recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep into a score from 0 to 10 that updates during the day. Alongside Recovery HRV, it gives you another way to follow recovery trends when planning your next workout. These features are intended for wellness use.
Ultra 3 already has ECG, temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications, hypertension notifications, and sleep score. Feature availability and user eligibility vary by region.
What Carries Over From Ultra 3?
Ultra 3 and Ultra 4 both support Emergency SOS via satellite, precision dual-frequency GPS, and 5G cellular. That leaves Ultra 3 as a useful option if outdoor navigation and off-grid communication are your main priorities.

Both models use a 49 by 44 by 12mm titanium case, a sapphire front crystal, and a 422-by-514-pixel always-on LTPO3 display. Peak brightness remains 3000 nits. Water resistance is still rated to 100 meters, with recreational scuba diving supported to 40 meters.
Ultra 4 is slightly heavier: 63.0 grams in natural titanium or 63.1 grams in black, compared with 61.6 and 61.8 grams respectively. Storage remains 64GB.
New Audio Features With S11
S11 enables Live Rewind, which displays the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as text after a double press of the Digital Crown. When enabled, Siri Recap creates a brief summary of a conversation's key points to review later.
Both features are due in beta later in 2026, initially in English and outside the EU. They require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 16 or later, excluding iPhone 16e.

Should You Upgrade From Ultra 3?
Keep Ultra 3 if its endurance already covers your routine and you mainly value the rugged build, bright display, GPS, and satellite capabilities. Those remain strong points of the previous generation.
Consider Ultra 4 if the extra battery margin would solve a real limitation or you specifically want the new health sensing hardware and recovery measurements.
Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the U.S., the same original starting price as Ultra 3. Pre-orders are open, and availability begins September 18. Our Apple Watch Price Tracker lists current pricing and availability from tracked retailers.
