Anthropic has officially released Claude Sonnet 4.6, a major update to its AI model that reportedly outperforms its predecessor in coding and agentic tasks. The release brings significant upgrades to computer use capabilities and introduces a massive context window designed to handle entire codebases or lengthy documentation in a single prompt.

Claude Sonnet 4.6 Launches With 1M Context Window, Opus-Level Coding Performance

The company describes Sonnet 4.6 as a comprehensive upgrade across coding, reasoning, and knowledge work. It says performance that previously required an Opus-class model is now available at the Sonnet tier. In internal testing, developers preferred the new model over the higher-tier Claude Opus 4.5 launched late last year, citing better instruction following and a lower tendency to overengineer solutions. Sonnet 4.6 is now the default model for Free and Pro users, and API pricing remains unchanged from Sonnet 4.5, starting at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

This release comes at an important time for Apple developers. With the recent launch of Xcode 26.3, which officially added support for Anthropic's tools, Sonnet 4.6's improved coding capabilities can be used directly within Apple's development environment. The model is designed to handle agentic workflows with greater reliability, allowing it to execute multi-step coding tasks with less human intervention.

One of the most notable advancements is in computer use. Anthropic says the model has made steady gains in navigating real-world software interfaces without specialized APIs. It can now handle complex tasks like navigating spreadsheets or filling out multi-step web forms by virtually clicking and typing, reaching a level of performance that early users say is comparable to human workflows. While risks remain regarding prompt injections, the company notes that safety evaluations show Sonnet 4.6 is a major improvement over Sonnet 4.5 and performs similarly to Opus 4.6 in resisting these attacks.

To support these complex tasks, Sonnet 4.6 introduces a 1 million token context window in beta. This expanded memory allows the AI to process vast amounts of data, such as entire codebases, lengthy contracts, or dozens of research papers, simultaneously, improving its ability to plan over long horizons.

The release follows a recent public spat between Anthropic and OpenAI over advertising models. Claude Sonnet 4.6 is available now across all Claude plans and through the API.
