Apple has released the first firmware update for its second-generation AirTag, modifying the alert sound to help users locate unknown trackers more easily.
The update brings the device to firmware version 3.0.45. According to Apple's release notes, the software specifically changes the unwanted tracking sound to make an unknown AirTag easier to pinpoint during Precision Finding. The release also includes standard bug fixes and other underlying improvements.
Apple introduced the second-generation AirTag earlier this year with an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip for extended range and an internal speaker that is up to 50 percent louder. While a recent teardown confirmed the speaker magnet can still be removed by determined individuals, this firmware update aims to maximize the effectiveness of the hardware for those relying on the built-in safety features.
There is no manual switch to force an AirTag to update. The firmware installs automatically in the background when the tracker is within Bluetooth range of a connected iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later. You can check your current version by opening the Find My app, navigating to the Items tab, selecting your AirTag, and tapping its name to reveal the software details.
If you are looking to pick up the new item trackers, they are available on Amazon for $29 each or $99 for a four-pack. You can monitor inventory and set price drop alerts using the iClarified AirTag 2 Price Tracker.
