Apple brought hundreds of U.S. manufacturers to Michigan State University this week to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence across supply chains and on the factory floor. The event marked the inaugural Spring Forum for the Apple Manufacturing Academy, an initiative set up to help U.S. businesses implement AI and advanced manufacturing techniques.

The academy is a core piece of Apple's broader $600 billion commitment to invest in the U.S. economy. Since its launch last year, the free program has paired Apple engineers and MSU experts with small and medium-sized businesses to bring advanced manufacturing methods into real-world operations.

To show how the training translates in practice, attendees toured Block Imaging, a Michigan company that services and refurbishes medical imaging equipment like MRI machines and CT scanners. Katie Runyon, the company's director of technical training, said the academy gave her team practical tools they could apply immediately to improve efficiency and quality control.

Priya Balasubramaniam, Apple's vice president of product operations, pointed to Block Imaging as exactly the kind of outcome the company is aiming for. She told attendees the goal is to deliver real-world applications that boost productivity, rather than theory.

Beyond the factory floor, the two-day forum included offsite tours with four stops, including the MSU Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, Peckham, and a dairy cattle research center. Back on campus, speakers from companies like Medtronic, Magna, LightGuide, and McKinsey discussed scaling AI solutions and deploying physical AI within manufacturing environments. The first day concluded with a poster session featuring MSU students and participating business owners, highlighting the next generation of manufacturing innovators.

During a fireside chat, Balasubramaniam sat down with MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz to discuss the skills workers will need as manufacturing shifts toward AI-driven processes, and why the academic partnership is central to Apple's approach.

So far, more than 150 businesses have participated in the academy's in-person sessions. To expand access, Apple recently launched virtual programming that opens the curriculum to companies nationwide. The academy is the only program of its kind in North America and is part of a broader push to strengthen domestic operations, coming just weeks after Apple announced it was funding new production lines for sensors and integrated circuits across several states.
