Apple has started rolling out a new firmware update for its second-generation AirTag, bringing the item tracker to version 3.0.49.
The release follows the initial 3.0.45 update pushed out last month. While Apple hasn't published detailed release notes for this specific build yet, it likely focuses on bug fixes and performance improvements. The prior version notably modified the unwanted tracking alert to make unknown trackers easier to locate during Precision Finding.
There is no manual switch to force an AirTag to update. The firmware installs automatically in the background when the tracker is within Bluetooth range of a connected iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later.
You can verify your current firmware version by opening the Find My app and navigating to the Items tab. Selecting your AirTag and tapping its name will reveal the serial number and active software build.
Apple introduced the second-generation AirTag earlier this year, adding an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip for longer range and a significantly louder built-in speaker. If you are looking to pick up the new trackers, you can monitor current inventory and set up price drop alerts using the iClarified AirTag 2 Price Tracker.
