Apple's OLED MacBook Pro is expected to provide a major boost to notebook OLED adoption. New research from Omdia projects OLED display revenue for notebook PCs will hit $4 billion this year, primarily driven by demand for Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro lineup.
Samsung Display will supply OLED panels for the 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch MacBook Pro models beginning in July, with the devices expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026. The panels use a hybrid OLED architecture based on oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology, a combination being used in a notebook form factor for the first time.
"This combination is being used for the first time in this form factor and is designed to reduce power consumption compared to LTPO and RGB single OLEDs," said Jerry Kang, Practice Leader at Omdia, in a press release accompanying the research.
The tandem OLED structure offers higher brightness, improved power efficiency, and a longer lifespan than conventional single-stack OLED panels. Omdia forecasts hybrid OLED's share of notebook PC shipments will increase from 12.6 percent in 2026 to 89.5 percent by 2033. Apple's adoption of the technology could help accelerate its use across the broader notebook market.
Samsung Display has been building toward this launch for months, investing heavily in an 8.6-generation OLED production line in South Korea. The facility recently achieved manufacturing yields above 90 percent, a key milestone for mass production.
Omdia notes that panel makers are also exploring new patterning methods to improve efficiency for large-screen OLED production. Beyond the established Fine Metal Mask process, technologies such as inkjet printing and fine photolithography masks are in active development.
"As seen previously in the smartphone OLED display market, a variety of technology combinations including backplanes, substrates, and OLED patterning methods, will be applied to notebook PC OLED displays over the long term," Kang said. "In particular, demand for hybrid OLED is expected to increase significantly for notebook PCs by 2033, as it enables thinner and lighter device designs by saving space for circuits and batteries."
The redesigned MacBook Pro models are widely expected to feature OLED displays, a thinner chassis, and Apple's next-generation M6 chips. Previous reports have also pointed to a touchscreen display and a hole-punch camera design. Omdia expects total OLED display revenue for notebook PCs to reach $11.5 billion by 2033, representing approximately 16.2 percent of all OLED display revenue.
