Ted Lasso Season 4 Has 'Season One Magic,' Jason Sudeikis Details Return

The upcoming fourth season of Ted Lasso recaptures the creative spark that made the series a hit, according to a wide-ranging new profile from The Hollywood Reporter. The story details how Jason Sudeikis went from insisting the story was finished to assembling the writers for one more season, with insiders saying the new episodes are "considerably stronger" than season three.



Sudeikis had long maintained that Ted Lasso was designed as a three-season story, but after reconnecting with the writers he concluded there was enough story left to tell. Co-creator Brendan Hunt said the writers reunited in Ojai, California, in early 2024 to test "the viability of the soil." That process ultimately produced a fourth season centered on AFC Richmond launching a women's team, expanding on a storyline teased in the season three finale. Returning alongside Sudeikis are Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Juno Temple (Keeley), and Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent).


According to THR, the general consensus internally is that season four is considerably stronger than season three. "I think it has some of that season one magic," Goldstein said, echoing a sentiment the publication says has been shared quietly by others involved with the show.

To provide more structure during production, Sudeikis enlisted veteran comedy writer Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Modern Family). Burditt recalled Sudeikis telling him, "I need someone to put up the walls, and I'll hang the art."

Sudeikis also addressed his creative split with co-creator Bill Lawrence, pushing back on suggestions that it ended badly. "Bill never yelled at me and I never yelled at him," he said. "My preference would have been to land the plane with the same people we took off with."

Season four premieres August 5 on Apple TV+ with one episode, followed by weekly releases through October 7.
