If Apple were to issue a recall for the iPhone 4 it could cost the company up to $1.5 billion, according to Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi.
Barrons reports that the Sacconaghi believes the time has come for Apple to explicitly and constructively address the iPhone 4s reception problems - ideally with an explanation for the root cause of the antenna issue, and a solution(s) for addressing it.
An in-store fix would cost Apple approximately $75 a piece, or $450 million assuming 6 million units. A full recall could run $250 a phone, or an estimated $1.5 billion.
Sacconaghi thinks a more likely solution will be the issuance of free bumpers costing the company about a dollar each.
He says the bigger problem is the emerging pattern of hubris that the company has displayed, for example: ● Refusal to fully discuss Steve Jobs health. ● Refusal to discuss plans for large cash position. ● Attack on Adobe Flash. ● Probe of lost iPhone, resulting in raid on a reporters home. ● Restrictions on app development. ● Dismissive stance on iPhone 4 reception problems to date.
The worry is that collectively these issues may over time begin to impact consumers perceptions of Apple, undermining its enormous prevailing commercial success."

I must be missing something?
If there IS a problem with an iPhone it's called WARRANTY, no?

Yes u r missing something! Who pays for warranty? Apple does, it doesn't matter if you call it a recall or warranty at the end of the day it comes out of apples pocket.

Also the thing that you are missing is that warranty will only fix something that apple says is a problem. They're denying there's anything wright other than a software malfunction

Where are they getting these numbers?
$75 in store, 250 mail in, $1 for a bumper? That's clearly wrong. The bumper portion must not just factor the cost of the bumper to make but also shipping and loss of sales (at $29 each that's quite a bit) from distribution. Plus the people who already bought bumpers would demand refunds and would have to receive them so add that to the number as well.
I hate baseless statistics in articles. No explanation. Pathetic.

Th recall wouldnt be only for antannae issues, thats why they're projecting these numbers. A bumper wont fix the proximity sensor issue - I know, I'm experiencing it now... There is more than one problem with the phone, but I think the kinks were getting worked at per each new shipment. I know a bunch of folks who just got their phones and they have not one problem with them. They rushed out the first shipment a little too quickly...
