AirPods 5: What Does the Extra $20 Actually Get You?

The $149 AirPods 5 upgrade buys more than a wireless charging case. Compared with the $129 model, it adds swipe volume controls, longer rated battery life, and a case speaker for Find My.

Active Noise Cancellation is included in both versions. The choice comes down largely to whether you value the extra controls, battery life, and charging options.

The Volume Gesture May Matter More Than Wireless Charging

AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add a swipe gesture on the earbuds: move a finger up or down the stem to adjust the volume.

That gives you direct volume control without taking out your phone or speaking to Siri. On the $129 model, volume must be adjusted through Siri or the connected device.



Battery life is another distinction. With ANC enabled, Apple rates the $149 version for up to five hours of listening on a charge, compared with four hours for the base model. Including the cases, the respective ANC-on totals are up to 22 and 20 hours. With noise control turned off, the $149 model is rated for up to seven hours per charge, versus six hours for the $129 version. Actual listening time varies with volume, features, and use.



Both cases have the same 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2mm dimensions, although the wireless version weighs 34.7 grams instead of 32.3 grams. The earbuds themselves have the same listed dimensions and weight in both packages. The upgraded case can be charged with a Qi-certified charger or Apple Watch charger in addition to USB-C. It also has a speaker that can play a sound through Find My, making the case easier to locate when misplaced.

What You Get Either Way

Both models have the H2 chip, ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Live Translation, and Personalized Spatial Audio. Both retain the open-ear design and carry an IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance rating for the earbuds and case.

Is the Extra $20 Worth It?

At Apple's launch prices, the $149 version is the better value for most buyers. Swipe volume control and the additional hour of rated listening with ANC are benefits even if you never use wireless charging, while the Find My speaker adds another practical advantage for a relatively small price difference.

The $129 model makes more sense if keeping the price down matters most, your listening sessions are relatively short, and you don't mind USB-C charging or adjusting volume elsewhere.
