Apple sold more iOS devices in 2011 than it sold Macs in the last 28 years, notes Horace Dediu of Asymco.
The iOS platform as a whole reached 316 million cumulative units at the end of last year. The iOS platform overtook the OS X platform in under four years and more iOS devices were sold in 2011 (156 million) than all the Macs ever sold (122 million).

I made a comment in this regard about four years ago to my friends that whoever owns the viable mobile platform will dominate the market. At the time, all my friends were heavy into BB or Palm. I told them those devices they used would go away in near future. They were all PC guys then. Now Palm already vanished.
I am going out on a limb again to say this: all these hardcore PC guys will probably migrate to Linux because they are who they are. The average user will adopt OS X. MS Windows will be third. Of course I could be wrong if MS decides to dump the price of their flagship Windows to $100. That is an unlikely scenario. Moreover; Apple will not concede the gaming market either. Their tablet is a potent gaming alternative platform, but they will need to invent a new human interface for the games to be truly enjoyable. I would hate to see an iPhone acting as a controller for iPad, yeah?
