Apple's new MacBooks take huge performance hit when running on AC Power with no battery connected.

Gearlog benchmarked a 2.53-Ghz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM using Cinebench R10's multiprocessor test, and achieved a score of 5,549 with the battery present and 3,504 with the battery removed.

Apple has documented this on their support site saying, "If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adaptor alone can provide."

While this might not be an issue for those with a working battery, it is unknown how the computer will benchmark with a dead battery present.

Basically the battery can supply more power to the computer is what it is saying. Apple knows what the battery is capable of. But 85 watts (which i believe is what the mag safe is) is not a lot of power. It is great to charge but not a lot to run a processor with 2 cores. So to prevent a fire hazard the laptop will not run to its best performance unless the battery is present. Think of it this way; you laptop is always running off the battery. When the power cord is connected it only charges the battery, nothing else. But if the battery is removed it now becomes the only source of power, the laptop recognizes this and adjusts accordingly.
