Hands-On With the iPad Flight Bag [Video]

The iPad has replaced more than 30 pounds of flight manuals carried around by pilots in a suitcase.

American worked with Jeppesen and the FAA to offer an iPad to every pilot and a RAM mount that remains in the aircraft. The company also provided pilots with a Hypermac backup battery that can extend the life of the iPad for an additional 24 hours.

American has received approval to use the iPad in the 777, 737, MD-80 and is awaiting approval for the 757/767 fleet. The company had to have the iPad tested in a hypobaric chamber to simulate how the device would handle during a rapid decompression and had to perform tests on the iPad mount.
