The WSJ is reporting that Microsoft will publicly unveil a new version of its cellphone operating system, Windows Mobile 7.
The operating system is said to sport a revamped user interface that resembles the look of their Zune HD music player.
With Windows Mobile 7, Microsoft has gotten more involved in hardware design by creating detailed plans for a small number of handset "chassis" on top of which hardware manufactures can build their devices, people familiar with the effort said. The idea behind the plan, these people said, is to limit the wild variation in quality of Windows phones and to make it easier for independent application developers to write software that runs well on them.
Microsoft is said to have another mobile project, code named Pink, which is a mobile phone aimed at teenagers. The device is a successor to the T-Mobile Sidekick and will focus heavily on social networking applications. WSJ sources say its unlikely we will see an announcement for this device next week; however, it could be launched on Verizon and Vodafone as early as this spring.
