Apple's much-anticipated HomePod with a display won't enter mass production until after WWDC 2025, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The shift from an early 2025 timeline to the third quarter is reportedly due to software challenges rather than hardware delays.
Kuo explained in a recent X post:
"Three months ago, I predicted that mass production of the new display-equipped HomePod would slip from 1Q25 to 3Q25 (after WWDC) due to software development issues. Beyond Apple Intelligence, the issues also involve ensuring the HomePod's interface aligns with new OS updates (like iOS 19) set to roll out across other devices in 2H25. This alignment is essential for seamlessly integrating new products into Apple's ecosystem."
Though first expected in 2024, the smart display device has faced repeated delays, as we've previously reported.
Powered by an A18 processor and featuring a 6-to-7-inch screen, the HomePod aims to elevate Apple's smart home lineup. It's purportedly designed to integrate closely with a smart home IP camera launching in 2026. Kuo forecasts shipments could reach 500,000 units in late 2025, with annual sales potentially hitting one million if the device gains traction. The delay ties into Apple's sweeping iOS 19 overhaul, which aims to refresh the interface across its ecosystem.
To align with these software changes, the HomePod could adopt Vision Pro-inspired elements, such as circular icons and streamlined controls. Mark Gurman suggests it may feature a square screen on an iMac-style base, blending retro aesthetics with modern functionality. This could reposition Apple's HomePod as a stronger contender in the smart home market. However, it will face stiff competition from Amazon's newly unveiled Alexa+ update, which boasts AI-powered features that far exceed its current assistant's capabilities.
