Apple is set to unveil a new software interface dubbed "Solarium" at its worldwide developers conference next month, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.
In his newsletter today, Gurman says the main focus at WWDC will be a new software interface, internally codenamed "Solarium"—a nod to sunlit glass rooms. He describes the redesign as slicker and more modern, heavily influenced by visionOS, which Vision Pro users say feels much fresher than current versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This visionOS-inspired design has been a recurring theme in speculation about iOS 19, with other leaks showcasing updated icons and a new floating tab bar. It aligns with a previous report from Gurman outlining a significant visual refresh across Apple's platforms.
A major theme this year is consistency and unification, an approach that will reportedly be especially apparent when comparing Macs and iPads, as Apple aims to make iPadOS operate more like a Mac.
Gurman's latest newsletter clarifies that the redesign will extend further than initially detailed, touching all of Apple's operating systems. This means tvOS and watchOS are also set for a refresh to match their more popular siblings. visionOS itself will receive adjustments where the changes make sense for the headset. While iOS 7 in 2013 was the biggest-ever visual change to the iPhone's software, the latest overhaul will be much more widely felt across the entire ecosystem.
That said, Apple risks getting criticized for tinkering with the wrong thing. Many companies are talking about using AI as a replacement for current operating systems. Apple, in contrast, is focusing on making the traditional OS approach more elegant.
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is scheduled to take place from June 9 to 13, 2025. The event will be held online, with a special in-person component at Apple Park on June 9. The company is expected to unveil major software updates, including iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, and the next version of tvOS, during the keynote address on June 9 at 10 a.m. PDT.
