Apple has announced a new $500 million commitment with MP Materials, the only fully integrated rare earth producer in the United States. The multiyear deal will see Apple buy American-made magnets from MP Materials' new Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas, and collaborate on a state-of-the-art recycling line in California.
The partnership will support the expansion of the Fort Worth facility with a series of neodymium magnet manufacturing lines designed specifically for Apple products. According to the announcement, the increased production will support dozens of new jobs in advanced manufacturing and R&D, and the two companies will provide extensive training to develop a new pool of U.S. talent. The American-made magnets will then be shipped worldwide to support Apple's supply chain.
In addition to the Fort Worth expansion, Apple and MP Materials are working together to establish a new recycling facility at the company's site in Mountain Pass, California. This plant will reprocess recycled rare earth feedstock, including material from used electronics and post-industrial scrap, for use in new Apple products. Apple has been a pioneer in using recycled rare earths, first introducing them in the Taptic Engine of the iPhone 11 in 2019. Today, the company says nearly all magnets across its devices are made with 100 percent recycled rare earth elements.
"American innovation drives everything we do at Apple, and we're proud to deepen our investment in the U.S. economy," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "Rare earth materials are essential for making advanced technology, and this partnership will help strengthen the supply of these vital materials here in the United States. We couldn't be more excited about the future of American manufacturing, and we will continue to invest in the ingenuity, creativity, and innovative spirit of the American people."
