Apple has gone live with iOS 4.2.1 and the firmware is now available to download. As a reminder to jailbreakers, don't accidentally update and make sure you have your SHSH blobs for 4.1 saved.

People, use common sense as with every update if you need an unlock (even if you're on 4.1) do NOT update. Just have a little patience.

i had the same problem and my problem was sorted by deleting tiny umbrella app and reinstalling itunes i think tiny umbrella is interfering the update server connection in some way

Look in your hosts file. You probably have it edited for SHSH restore. That's the issue.
Remember NOT to update if you want to keep jailbreak or have a chance at unlock. (jailbreak should be updated soon enough) I think there is a tethered jailbreak redsn0w out if one really can't wait.

This is likely because the Apple Servers are being slammed. Took around 20+ attempts before it worked for me.

It's because of Tinyumbrella. Edit your hosts file, remove the line for gs.apple.com, flush your cache, then quit and relaunch iTunes. It works after that.

aye cheers i came across it. think it'll leave it for now n wait for an untethered jailbreak, i tend to end up freezin my idevices fairly frequently an needing to reboot lol, not worth the hassle of jailbreakin everytime ^^

Same question....
I'm currently at 4.1 and so I think it's okay to update to 4.2 since both cannot unlock anyway. Might just update it to try new features.
