Apple has secured FDA clearance for its Medical Imaging Calibration Feature, removing a key regulatory hurdle for the new Studio Display XDR in diagnostic radiology. The decision, finalized on April 1, means Apple's pending review has now been resolved, allowing medical professionals to use the feature with compatible software in the U.S.
When Apple unveiled the Studio Display XDR last month, it said the Medical Imaging Calibrator on macOS was still awaiting FDA clearance. The company positioned the display as a high-end reference monitor for professional workflows, featuring a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR panel, an advanced mini-LED backlight with 2,304 local dimming zones, up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Apple also said the display was designed for workflows including HDR video editing, 3D rendering, and diagnostic radiology.
The FDA's 510(k) entry identifies the cleared product as the Medical Imaging Calibration Feature, or MICF, under product code SHN. Apple submitted the filing on November 17, 2025, and received a substantially equivalent decision on April 1, 2026. That clearance follows Apple's earlier statement that Studio Display XDR would support DICOM medical imaging presets and a Medical Imaging Calibrator to let radiologists view diagnostic images directly on the display when paired with a compatible DICOM viewer.
Apple says Studio Display XDR offers the same camera and audio system as Studio Display, including a 12MP Center Stage camera, a three-microphone array, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio. It also features Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, two additional USB-C ports, and support for up to 140W of charging through the included cable. For medical professionals already using the Mac in office or home setups, the display could now serve as a more versatile alternative to traditional single-purpose medical imaging displays.
The clearance arrives just weeks after launch and adds to Apple's push to position the display beyond traditional creative workflows. The company recently reduced the price of Studio Display XDR when configured with a VESA mount adapter, a change that could make it more appealing for specialized workspaces that rely on custom mounting solutions.
