Apple job listings reveal that the company is looking to pursue further uses for voice recognition in iOS.
9to5Mac notes that Apple is hiring for four positions (1,2,3,4). An iOS Speech Application Engineer, two Speech Recognition Engineers, and a Senior Speech Research Scientist.
Are you looking to contribute to a product that is redefining the smartphone? The iOS Application Frameworks team is looking for an exceptional Speech Engineer. You will work with our team on a wide variety of speech-related development activities. We need a team player you will be working closely with engineers on the Application Frameworks team as well as other teams at Apple and we need someone who is comfortable working in a fast paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.
Notably, Apple also indicates it would like candidates that have experience in rival software such as "Nuance Recognizer, IBM WebSphere Voice, Google Voice Search, or similar voice search tools."
In April, Apple acquired Siri, a personal assistant for the iPhone that lets you speak to your iPhone and have it perform tasks such as get a taxi, book a table at a good steak house, or see who's playing at Madison Square Garden.
It's possible that Apple may be hiring to build on technology gained from its Siri acquisition.
