Apple has reportedly placed an order with AU Optronics for iPad 2 LCD panels at 3-4x the regular price, according to the Economic Daily News.
This would be the first order AU Optronics has obtained for the iPad 2 and will take up over half the capacity of its plant in Taichung, Taiwan. The company is capable of shipping 30 million screens in one year, said the EDN.
If the report is accurate, it would seem strange for Apple to pay a higher than normal price for components unless supply or quality control played a factor.

Must be to relieve constrained supply due to the catastrophe in Japan. Key suppliers have said they can meet quota for a several more weeks, but perhaps Apple expects issues after that.
