Backblaze, una compañia de dedicada a realizar respaldos, la cual ha publicado un reporte que brinda información sobre la duración de los discos duros. Blackblaze posee más de 25.000 discos duros funcionando (rotando) todo el día. Mas del 74% de los discos que ellos poseen han durado mas de cuatro (4) años, lo qu eimplica que el 26% de los discos falla en los primeros cuatro (4) años de uso.

Backblaze calculó tres (3) tasas diferentes de fallas:
● Para los primeros 1.5 años, los discos fallan a una tasa de 5.1% por año.
● Para los siguientes 1.5 años, los discos fallan MENOS ,a una tasa aproximada de 1.4% por año.
● Despues de tres (3) años, la tasa de falla se dispara a 11.8% por año.

El gráfico inferior muestra que aproximadamente el 80% de los discos adquiridos por Blackblaze todavía se encuentran operativos.

Blackblaze es una organización que funciona desde hace cinco (5) años por lo que no poseen datos anteriores a ese período, sin embargo ellos realización una extrapolación de la línea del gráfico anterior para estimar el punto en el cúal la mitad de los discos haya fallado, determinando que "El tiempo promedio de vida de un disco duro es superior a seis (6) años".

Laptop HDD's fail more often than a desktop or tower, as many carry them around while they're running, tempting the hard drive gods. Kids laptops fail 10 times more than any other user. That being said, I have a 2001 iMac that still runs today, on the original HD.

Needs several qualifiers....especially to do with actual use. Their HDDs are spinning 24/7. Mine spin a couple of hours every week. At that rate, mine should last a couple of lifetimes.

Yours will fail sooner because every shutdown and switch on are much worse than 24/7

That is a myth. The disk plates are balanced and the force when stopping and spinning the disk is applied evenly on them.

I think this is too simplistic. I assume that in the Backup application there are many many read/writes going on. I have four HD's in my Mac Pro running 24x7 and have had no failures after four years. Simple probability analysis of the 0.8 number from the graph suggests that the probability of at least one drive failing is about 0.6. Of course my HD's don't have constant read/writes going on.
