Apple saw its smartphone sales grow in the United States during the first quarter of 2026, pushing against a noticeable downturn across the rest of the domestic market.
U.S. iPhone sales volume increased by 1.3 percent year over year, while the overall smartphone market shrank by 5.7 percent. According to Counterpoint Research, Android device sales fell 14.4 percent during the same period. The data points to the iPhone 17 lineup as the primary catalyst for Apple's momentum. Supply constraints late last year pushed a chunk of holiday demand into the first quarter, and stronger-than-expected interest in the base iPhone 17 forced the company to recalibrate production to keep up.
Apple also took advantage of a quieter release calendar from its biggest rival. Samsung delayed the rollout of its Galaxy S26 series until mid-March, leaving a temporary gap in the premium smartphone market. That timing helped Apple grow its share across all three major U.S. carriers, climbing to 77 percent of smartphone sales at Verizon.
The broader market slowdown wasn't just tied to delayed flagship launches. Analysts also highlighted unexpected weakness in the prepaid and low-end segments. Instead of using tax returns to upgrade their phones, many consumers facing macroeconomic pressure opted to pay down credit card debt. At the same time, rising memory costs are squeezing smaller manufacturers out of the budget space, helping Motorola and Samsung consolidate market share in prepaid channels like Cricket and Metro.
Apple also maintained its pricing strategy with the recently launched iPhone 17e, which kept the same starting price year over year while increasing base storage to 256GB. Counterpoint says the approach reflects Apple's focus on expanding its ecosystem and growing services revenue, even if it comes at the expense of short-term hardware profitability. Combined with strong carrier promotions, the strategy is making it increasingly difficult for competing Android brands to keep pace.
