SpaceX has exercised its option to acquire AI code editor Cursor in an all-stock transaction, moving forward with a deal that deepens Elon Musk's footprint in software development.
The space exploration company confirmed the move in a post on X, stating its goal is to build the world's most useful AI models. The transaction exercises an acquisition option SpaceX secured in April which valued Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, at up to $60 billion. The acquisition comes just days after SpaceX's historic public debut, which valued the company at roughly $2 trillion.
For the past few months, SpaceXAI and Cursor have been jointly training a new model using SpaceX's computing infrastructure. This collaborative AI model will soon be released across both the Cursor application and Grok Build, xAI's terminal-based coding agent. Bringing Cursor in-house expands SpaceX's presence in AI-powered software development tools.
Cursor has become a widely adopted AI-assisted coding platform, particularly among developers on macOS. The acquisition comes as Apple expands AI-powered development features in Xcode 27 and competition intensifies among companies building AI tools for software development.
