iOS 27 Beta 4 Code Hints at iPhone With Dual Batteries

The latest iOS 27 developer beta has surfaced what may be the clearest software evidence yet that Apple is preparing an iPhone with multiple batteries. Macworld discovered new Battery Health strings in the fourth beta that describe multiple batteries inside an iPhone, wording not used by current iPhone models.



Alongside the existing Battery Health messages used for today's single-battery iPhones, Apple has added new strings for a multi-battery model. Among them are phrases such as "the batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected" and "the health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded." Another string warns that "one of the batteries could not be verified as a genuine Apple battery."


Apple is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone, which may be branded iPhone Ultra, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this September. Book-style foldable phones typically divide their battery capacity between two cells, with one positioned on each side of the hinge. Reports earlier this month pointed to cells with capacities of 1,921 mAh and 2,962 mAh, totaling approximately 4,883 mAh.

Those new Battery Health messages also raise the possibility that Apple could track the condition and authenticity of each cell separately. It is less clear whether an authorized service provider would be able to replace only one degraded cell, as the strings merely state that the "batteries" can be replaced to restore performance and capacity.

Although some have suggested the plural wording could account for an external battery accessory, its appearance alongside the existing single-battery strings suggests Apple is preparing software support for a different internal battery architecture.

This is not the first foldable-related discovery inside iOS 27. Earlier betas included references to fold states and hinge angle detection, and Apple has been encouraging developers to ready their apps for resizable, multi-screen layouts. Separately, previous report said key hinge issues have been largely resolved as Apple's first foldable iPhone moves closer to mass production.
