iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone 15 Pro: What Changes After Three Years?

Three years after iPhone 15 Pro introduced titanium and USB-C to Apple's Pro lineup, the iPhone 18 Pro brings a larger display, changes to every rear-camera role, and much longer battery ratings. It also trades titanium for aluminum and adds weight, so this is a more substantial change in the hand than the familiar Pro name might suggest.

For someone still using the smaller iPhone 15 Pro, the question is whether those accumulated improvements are worth giving up a lighter 6.1-inch phone. Here's what you gain, what carries over, and where the upgrade is most likely to matter.

A Larger Display, and a 24-Gram Weight Increase

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, up from 6.1 inches on iPhone 15 Pro. Both use OLED panels with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz and an always-on display, but the newer model raises peak outdoor brightness from 2000 to 3000 nits. It also has an anti-reflective coating and a smaller Dynamic Island.

That extra screen comes in a taller, wider phone. The 18 Pro measures 150 × 71.9 × 8.75mm and weighs 211 grams; the 15 Pro is 146.6 × 70.6 × 8.25mm and 187 grams. The difference is 3.4mm in height, 1.3mm in width, and 24 grams before a case.

On iPhone 18 Pro, Apple uses an aluminum unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. The 15 Pro has titanium, a Ceramic Shield front, and a textured matte glass back. Both carry an IP68 rating, tested at a maximum depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes.


If the 15 Pro's relatively compact size is one of your favorite things about it, try the 18 Pro in person before committing. The new screen gives you more room without moving to a Pro Max, but it is a bigger phone.

More Flexibility Across the Camera System

Both phones have a 48MP Main camera, but the iPhone 18 Pro adds a variable aperture with f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0 settings. The 15 Pro uses a fixed f/1.78 aperture. On the newer camera, a wider opening admits more light, while a narrower one keeps more of a scene in focus.

The iPhone 18 Pro's Camera app can adjust aperture automatically. Its new Pro controls also let you set aperture, shutter speed and white balance yourself.

The Ultra Wide camera rises from 12MP on the 15 Pro to 48MP on the 18 Pro. Telephoto changes from the smaller 15 Pro's 12MP 3x camera, with a 77mm-equivalent lens, to a 48MP 4x camera with a 100mm-equivalent lens. The new sensor also supplies a 12MP optical-quality 8x crop. Both phones offer a 12MP 2x option derived from the Main sensor.

Those changes give the 18 Pro more reach for distant subjects as well as a higher-resolution Ultra Wide camera. The front camera moves from the 15 Pro's 12MP TrueDepth system to the 18 Pro's 18MP Center Stage camera.

The 18 Pro also has Camera Control, a dedicated control for accessing camera functions. The 15 Pro has the customizable Action button but no Camera Control; the 18 Pro keeps the Action button as well.

A Bigger Step for Video Work

The iPhone 15 Pro records Dolby Vision video at up to 4K/60 fps. The 18 Pro's Main camera reaches 4K/120 fps, giving you a higher-resolution option for slow motion. External ProRes recording similarly moves from a maximum of 4K/60 fps on the 15 Pro to 4K/120 fps on the 18 Pro.


The iPhone 15 Pro already supports external ProRes recording. The 18 Pro raises its maximum frame rate and adds further production features.

Rear-camera Cinematic mode rises from 4K/30 fps on the 15 Pro to 4K/60 fps on the 18 Pro, which also allows Cinematic effects to be applied after capture. ProRes RAW through compatible apps and Genlock with supported third-party hardware and software are additional options on the 18 Pro.

For still photographers, the 18 Pro adds Apple Reference Image capture. This opt-in feature records signed Main-camera sensor data that Private Cloud Compute develops into an unalterable reference, so you can compare a photo's original capture with later edits. The 15 Pro does not gain Reference capture. It won't be available in the EU at launch, and the feature won't be available in China at launch.

Longer Battery Ratings, With Less Time Plugged In

Apple rates the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video, compared with the 15 Pro's original ratings of 23 and 20 hours. These are Apple's generation-specific test results; daily use and the condition of a three-year-old battery will affect your experience.

Wired fast charging is another practical change. The 18 Pro can reach up to 50% in around 15 minutes, using a 60W-capable USB PD 3.1 or newer adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply and a 60W-capable USB-C cable. The 15 Pro's stated time is around 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter.

MagSafe rises from up to 15W on the 15 Pro to up to 25W on the 18 Pro. For the newer phone's up-to-50%-in-30-minutes MagSafe claim, Apple specifies a compatible MagSafe Charger and a 35W-or-higher adapter. An older charging setup may still be useful, but reaching the new maximums can require new accessories.

The battery figures above use the U.S. models. Apple lists lower video-playback ratings for iPhone 18 Pro versions equipped with a physical SIM tray.

You Can Keep the 15 Pro and Still Get iOS 27

The 18 Pro's A20 Pro replaces the A17 Pro, with a seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Wireless connectivity moves from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Both phones already have USB-C with USB 3 transfers up to 10Gb/s when used with a compatible cable.

Both also support Apple Intelligence and are compatible with iOS 27, arriving September 14. The 15 Pro remains eligible for that software update, so the new cameras, display, battery, and charging features do most of the work in making the case for an upgrade.

Should You Upgrade After Three Years?

The iPhone 18 Pro offers a broad upgrade for a 15 Pro owner who takes lots of photos or wants longer battery life. You gain variable aperture, higher-resolution Ultra Wide and telephoto cameras, more reach, a newer front camera, and faster charging. Video creators have more to gain here than someone coming from a 16 Pro, which already supports 4K/120 fps.

Keep the iPhone 15 Pro if its size suits you and it still handles your day comfortably. USB-C, ProMotion, Apple Intelligence, and iOS 27 support all remain part of the package. If battery wear is the main problem, a battery-service quote is worth comparing with the price of a new phone.

The 18 Pro starts at $1,199 with 256GB. The 15 Pro originally launched at $999 with 128GB, so the starting price has risen $200 while base storage has doubled. The 18 Pro opened for pre-order September 12 and arrives September 18 in first-wave markets.
