Best Buy CEO Says iPad Cannibalizing Up to 50% of Laptop Sales

Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn tells the WSJ that the iPad has cannibalized sales of laptops by up to 50%.

Best Buy said smartphone sales continued to rise compared with a year ago, as did portable computer totals, buoyed by the iPad. However, television sales fell despite the rollout of new 3D models, with both average prices and total volumes notching "low-double digit" declines compared with last year. Mr. Dunn also said internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%.

"It's a very different environment now," said Stephen Baker, the chief electronics analyst for market researcher NPD Group Inc. "The real cool stuff now will be the tablets, e-readers and probably the higher-end digital cameras."

Best Buy recently announced that it will expand availability of the Apple iPad with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi +3G models to all 1,093 U.S. stores beginning Sept. 26.

Why do idiots insist on bringing up pointless facts about what the iPad cannot do? If you have a pc at home and you use your laptop or net book to play video games, you are an idiot. Only valid argument is it's lack of a USB port and maybe an sd card slot but you can pay $30 bucks for the camera connection kit and plug in a USB stick and access it like an hard drive. There seriously is no reason why anyone should want to carry around DVDs to watch on their laptops and net books or even to listen or burn CDs and DVDs, it's a waste of time when there's digital media readily accessible. It's funny how defensive net book and laptop owners get when there's an article about how the iPad is cutting into the sales, give it a rest.

Who didn't see this coming? Laptops are heavy, hot, and almost always need to be plugged into an electrical socket due to poor battery performance. I got rid of my laptop a month after I bought my iPad and don't miss it at all.

yup, spending what amounts to the same amount of money you would have paid for a laptop and got something with only a fraction of the power. an educated buyer is you!

How much power do you need to read and write email, view web pages, photos, movies, etc? You still need a computer to manage an iPad. Of which I have for creating. I replaced my laptop for an iPad because i use it to consume more that to create. For that reason it's a good choice. Your response just shows what a laggard you are.
