RedSn0w Gets Updated to Easily Boot Devices With Tethered Jailbreak

The iPhone Dev-Team has updated RedSn0w to easily boot devices that are running a tethered jailbreak.

We've updated redsn0w to include "one-click" support for those of you running the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak. Using command-line arguments, you can now bypass the screens you'd normally see as you use redsn0w to "Just boot tethered for now".

The available command line arguments are:
-j to ask redsn0w to "Just boot now tethered for now"
-i to specify your reference IPSW
-o for old-bootrom iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS
-b to specify your own boot logo png

For example, redsn0w for Mac to do a tethered boot of an iPod touch 4G jailbroken at 4.2.1:

open ~/Desktop/redsn0w.app —args -j ~/Desktop/iPod4,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

This assumes both redsn0w and the IPSW are on your OS X desktop, so modify as necessary! Included in the zip is an example script file that you can double click on to launch redsn0w like this (the Windows example assumes everything is in C:). (Mac users: please remember to change the permissions of your custom *.command files to allow execution.)

This should help ease the pain of the tethered jailbreak until @comex comes up with a 4.2.1 untether (or for those of you with legit access to the 4.2b3 IPSW, until the "Jailbreak Monte" untether is out of beta)!

● PLEASE UPGRADE TO iTunes 10.1 FOR BEST RESULTS
● WINDOWS 7 USERS SHOULD RUN redsn0w IN “XP COMPATIBILITY” MODE
● Make sure you’re using a USB 2.0 port

You can download RedSn0w 0.9.6rc7 from here:

Skywalker:~ joendaba$ open ~/Desktop/redsn0w.app —args -j open: invalid option -- j Usage: open [-e] [-t] [-f] [-W] [-R] [-n] [-g] [-h] [-b ] [-a ] [filenames] [--args arguments] Help: Open opens files from a shell. By default, opens each file using the default application for that file. If the file is in the form of a URL, the file will be opened as a URL. Options: -a Opens with the specified application. -b Opens with the specified application bundle identifier. -e Opens with TextEdit. -t Opens with default text editor. -f Reads input from standard input and opens with TextEdit. -R, --reveal Selects in the Finder instead of opening. -W, --wait-apps Blocks until the used applications are closed (even if they were already running). --args All remaining arguments are passed in argv to the application's main() function instead of opened. -n, --new Open a new instance of the application even if one is already running. -g, --background Does not bring the application to the foreground. -h, --header Searches header file locations for headers matching the given filenames, and opens them.

Since I have updated to 4.2.1 custom, and updated to baseband 6.15, my phone is stuck in pwned DFU mode. I pretty much tried everything for 2 days now and cannot kick it out of DFU. Moreover, if I boot thetered, after a few times the screen becomes totally white and stays like that till I press power and home button to go in hardware dfu. I even opened the phone and disconnected the board from the battery to try to fix that problem, but to no avail. Still stuck in DFU. Anyone can help? Or maybe the devs should be aware of this problem. As it seems that a lot of people are stuck like me. thanks for the efforts though, it is highly appreciated! I knew the risks when I installed the beta, but I had to because I could not use the phone anyway.

not sure if this will work for you. But when I was stuck I loaded Tiny Umbrella. There's a button for "Exit Recovery" and that was all it took for me.

Tiny Umbrella does not work. The phone is in DFU mode not in Recovery. Tiny does not recognize the phone as being in Recovery. Thanks anyway

REstore doesn't workl. I tried to flash the custom firmware again, but no luck. I get a hardware failure message from itune everytime. BEcause I have 3GS with new bootrom, I updated the baseband, thus I cannot go back to a stock firmware from apple.

You have to install to original firmware from apple. Then re jailbreak

I cannot restore to original firmware from apple when the baseband is changed. I can only restore to custom firmware, but not while in DFU. So I really need to kick it out of DFU, because I cannot even boot with redsnow now, as the screen goes all White.

still no bluetooth whatsoever, correct? I was happy with the recent RedSn0w until I realized bluetooth was dead. After digging I found that this is a known issue with the current unteathered jailbreak. But no site seems to put it up front. I had to go back to 4.1

Please... Please... Please... geohot - make it ra1n soon. (as much as I hate to say it...ugh) This is getting ridiculous with the tethered boot. I appreciate all that the dev-team does, but it gets to the point that I almost want to break my jailbreak for this reason.

Well said!.... This is just getting stupid. Apple is going to have a new version before this gets done. Just want a UN-TETHERED Jailbreak for my iPad, I'll live with the iPhone as it is.

Unless you know (or me for that matter) how to hack and reverse engineer codes, can't complain on other's work. don't use the hack if you don't like it. the devs are working hard on fixing the issues. they did say it was beta and to stay away from it for stability.

By all means... i'm not complaining what-so-ever and I'm sorry you interpreted it that way. But seriously... when you have to rerun programs... use command lines, etc etc just to boot up a phone - it generally isn't worth the hassle. Bluetooth messed up... ipod not working... I would say that it isn't even a 'beta' at this stage...maybe an ALPHA/TESTING/DON'T RELEASE stage. Geohot - you push a button and put it into DFU. Anyway... each there own.
