New MacBook Air Owners Report Wi-Fi Issues

Owners of the new 2013 MacBook Air are reporting issues with Wi-Fi connectivity, according to a Gizmodo report. The site is experiencing issues with their new notebooks and has also spotted a growing Apple Support forum discussion on the issue.

The problems they’re seeing sound eerily similar to those we’re experiencing with our machines: Wi-Fi will initially connect, but after a minute or two the connection will stop working, and a total reboot is needed to be able to connect again. The problem is made worse when the Air is on a desk, quite possibly something to do with the Wi-Fi antenna being (*we think*) in the black plastic strip along the bottom of the screen.

A source at one of Apple's retail stores in London told Gizmodo that they are seeing "well above average" complaints and returns due to the issue.

Hopefully the Wi-Fi issues are something that can be address with a software update. Apple has already released the first beta of OS X 10.8.5 which has Wi-Fi as a focus area.

Further to my previous posting, I purchased a Netgear 6300 Modem/Router, and this seems to have resolved my connectivity problems at home. I'll drop by the Apple shop and share my information, I'm just a bit fearful now that I may experience connectivity problems elsewhere. Will have to wait and see.

Ability to execute ! - That is Apple's problem after Jobs.. And it doesn't improve it seems. These things you check and fix before launch !

Hi I purchased a new Macbook Air 13" from the Sydney City Apple Store in George Street on Tuesday 18 June 2013, I returned it Thursday 20 June because I was having problems connecting to the internet, and it kept dropping out after a minute or so. Prior to returning it I took it to a reputable computer store in the city to confirm my problem, which they did. The replacement Macbook Air is experiencing the same problems. I may purchase a new more powerful modem/router, but suspect this is a design problem with the laptop. Adrian Sydney

Hmmm...seems like Apple in general is having widespread wifi issues with their products. The iPhone 5 (I'm waiting on a replacement to come in and them I'm selling it), iPod touch and ipad now even on the Air? Is poor build quality being the cause for this?
