Apple's new manufacturing deal with GT Advanced Technologies will boost production capacity allowing the company to produce enough sapphire material to make 5-inch sapphire screen covers for 33.79-50.56 million iPhones per year, reports DigiTimes.
US$578 million can be used to procure 1,930-2,890 sapphire growing furnaces for a monthly production of 5.28-7.90 million mm of 2-inch-equivalent sapphire ingots, Digitimes Research indicated. Such a volume of sapphire ingots could be used to make screen covers for 33.79-50.56 million 5-inch iPhones a year, accounting for 17.8-26.6% of the estimated 190 million iPhones to be shipped in 2014.
Despite this estimate, analysts feel it is more likely that Apple will use the sapphire crystal to cover the display of a wearable device such as the rumored iWatch.
Or maybe they know how smart it is to improve before moving on and far more users prefer small screen over a phablet. Look at s4, did it get any better than iphone before getting bigger because some people say that that's what they hate about s4 is size and there are more iphone users!
1. did you readthe past few articles, it is said that it can control home tempurate like air conditioner, adjust thermostat, and connects to iphone, but other than that, 2. 5 inch will be a fail, they'll make it just to get galasheeps who care about size more to switch back from note to iphone! They don't care that much for specs this way! Plus competitors are forcing them to do it since they did it and get people what they want, but hopefully release the next iphone as 4 inch and 5 inch making 2 new phones in 2014!
