Apple Warns Users That iPhone X Display May Shift in Color and Hue, Experience Burn-In

In a new support document posted today, Apple warns users to expect slight shifts in color and hue as well as burn-in with the new OLED display on the iPhone X.

If you look at an OLED display off-angle, you might notice slight shifts in color and hue. This is a characteristic of OLED and is normal behavior. With extended long-term use, OLED displays can also show slight visual changes. This is also expected behavior and can include “image persistence” or “burn-in,” where the display shows a faint remnant of an image even after a new image appears on the screen. This can occur in more extreme cases such as when the same high contrast image is continuously displayed for prolonged periods of time. We’ve engineered the Super Retina display to be the best in the industry in reducing the effects of OLED "burn-in."

Apple offers the following suggestions on how to prevent these problems from occurring:

● Use Auto-Brightness to automatically adjust the brightness of your display based on the ambient light in your location. This setting is on by default. To check this setting, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.
● Set your iPhone X to turn off the display when you aren’t using it. Choosing a shorter time is recommended. To adjust this setting, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock.
● Avoid displaying static images at maximum brightness for long periods of time. If you have an app that keeps your display on when you aren’t actively using your iPhone X, you can temporarily reduce the brightness level using Control Center.

I don’t think most people here realise all Apple is doing is warning users of a issue which pretty much affects all screens on mobile devices today. LED’s also experience burn in but OLED does a little more; however with Oled you get much better contrast and colour reproduction.

Exactly, but since it’s Apple, we expect better and not the same as the rest. It’s what they always do, improve and innovate.

I finally got my hands on the iPhone X yesterday. I loved the phone but the screen is still a little small because it’s not as wide as the plus. I hope next year they will make a larger version because the dimensions to me looked like the 5s. Other than that, I still loved it but I’ll wait. Many apps need to catch up too. It’s still an awesome phone with all the new gestures but the screen is still too small because it doesn’t really take the whole front AND it’s narrow. Waiting or buying are both good decisions. I’m still on the fence. In case anyone cares. Bye.

Silly ppl ... It is a known issue with all oled panels.To avoid "damaging" just remember *do not leave still image (like same background) for long period of time.That's it,for next 2 years you won't notice any color degradation or burn-in's

I always had some automatic "wallpaper cycler" on my phone similar like on pc,just cause same pic is boring. Changing it manually would be head wrecking,but I'm more then sure - with iphone x you won't need to jailbeak for this feature lol XD

I use both Samsung and apple . Apple never had burn in problem ... Samsung all the time ... keyboard always burn right in the screen and Samsung doesn’t even tell you .. they never say burn in problems , over heating not even exploding issues .... apple is doing good by telling you before hand

Apple never used OLED until X. They've used LCD and that is why there was no burn in. I really hope Apple uses LCD for next gen iPhone X. OLED is terrible.

Oled isn’t the only technology prone to burn In conventional led is too. Oled has much better colour reproduction and contrast.

Auto bright has always been disabled on my phone's. It never works the way I want it.i programmed the volume buttons to adjust brightness myself. Laughing at the oled issuesno prefer the non oled screens

I agree! I hate auto brightness. I always disable it. Besides never getting it right for me, my vision issues become aggravated producing further effects like headaches and dizziness. That’s not mentioning other issues. Good idea on the volume buttons. At least Apple gives us options. I just use the control center to adjust it myself because find it more convenient. I hope they fix those screen issues for the next generation but we have to see how the real issues respond. I’m going to check it out today.

This reason coming as the first issue reminds me why waiting for user input was the right thing to do. I've always being used to auto brightness, very convenient depending on ambient light. May have to turn my screen off often cuz I never do it now. Still gonna get my iPhone X later tho :P

Steve Wozniak Who has purchased every iPhone on launch day even the iPhone C refuses to purchase this phone. Anybody who buys this phone is a 100% crash test dummy for Apple. This phone should not have been released out of testing phase because of all the problems that it has. Most of you will never know all the issues because you do not work at Apple, however this is really a crash test dummy phone. If you're smart you'll wait for the second iteration and you'll stay the Hell away from this one. Cheers

I’m concerned with the video aspect of it. Say I stream a movie or a show or a video? The screen is on for quite sometime even though I keep it at a third of the brightness when I’m watching videos.

That explains why they removed auto-brightness turn off toggle from display settings in iOS 11 and hide it in other general settings. They want everyone to keep auto brightness on now, so they get less crap about burn in

I agree with you 100%, sir. I find Apple's write up about the Super Retina Display very informative and now I know how to take care of my new OLED display for years to come. I certainly don't want to pay the $500 screen replacement fee so this seems like the smarter route. At least Apple is warning us beforehand about it. My iPhone X 256gb shipped this afternoon and hope to receive Monday morning at work :) I hope everyone enjoys their new iPhones!

I hate auto brightness. The first thing I do is eliminate it. I hope they don’t remove this feature in the future. It’s annoying for those of us with certain issues. I do however keep it at a third brightness. The only time my phone goes full brightness is under sunlight. Otherwise it’s always at a third brightness. Auto brightness annoys me and doesn’t always get it right. It gives me a headache and makes me dizzy.
