Apple's Studio Display hasn't seen an update since it launched, but that dry spell might end in 2026 with some massive upgrades. New code found in a pre-release version of iOS 26 suggests the next model will finally bring ProMotion and HDR support to the desktop.
The findings, reported by Macworld, pinpoint an unreleased device codenamed "J527." The standout detail here is a reference to a variable refresh rate topping out at 120Hz. That means the smooth scrolling and fluid motion users have enjoyed on the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro for years could finally land on Apple's consumer monitor, replacing the current 60Hz panel.
It looks like image quality is getting a serious bump, too. The code explicitly mentions High Dynamic Range support, a feature missing from the current Studio Display which is stuck with standard SDR brightness levels. While the leak doesn't confirm the specific panel type, hitting those HDR targets usually requires Mini-LED backlighting—similar to the Liquid Retina XDR screens Apple uses on its high-end laptops.
Under the hood, Apple appears to be swapping out the aging A13 processor for a much newer A19 chip. Since the monitor relies on its own silicon to handle features like Center Stage and Spatial Audio, the jump in processing power should keep things snappy and future-proof the display for years to come.
The timing makes sense. We've been tracking reports of a broader 2026 hardware roadmap that includes M5 updates for the Mac Studio and Mac mini. Launching a display that can actually keep up with those machines seems like the logical next step. There are also still whispers of a new Pro Display XDR floating around, potentially with its own built-in webcam.
