Google is updating its Veo AI video generator today with support for native vertical video and 4K resolution. The changes to the "Ingredients to Video" feature are designed to improve visual clarity while keeping subjects consistent across different scenes.
The update to Veo 3.1 addresses one of the more persistent challenges in generative video: maintaining visual consistency from shot to shot. Google says the new model does a better job preserving character identity and background textures as scenes change, making it easier to reuse specific visual elements or carry the same subject through a multi-scene narrative.
Mobile creators are a clear focus of this release. Veo can now generate native 9:16 vertical video, allowing creators to produce full-screen content for platforms like YouTube Shorts without cropping landscape footage or sacrificing quality. For more advanced workflows, Google has also added upscaling options for 1080p and 4K output.
The update arrives just a day after Apple and Google confirmed a partnership to use Gemini models for the next generation of Siri. While that agreement centers on assistant intelligence, Google continues to expand the media generation side of its ecosystem. The release also follows recent moves by competitors, including OpenAI's deal to bring Disney characters to Sora.
The new features are rolling out now in the Gemini app, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube Create, with broader availability across Google's creator and enterprise tools. To help distinguish generated content from real footage, Google is embedding its imperceptible SynthID digital watermark into the video files.
