Apple may be preparing more than one new Studio Display. Code in Apple's software suggests the company is testing two separate versions of the monitor, potentially splitting the lineup into standard and higher-end models.
The first signs of a next-generation display appeared last year in a pre-release build of iOS 26, which referenced a model identified as J527. That display was tied to upgrades like ProMotion and HDR. More recently, the final public build of macOS 26.3 listed two unreleased displays under the identifiers J427 and J527. A closer look at a leaked kernel debug kit, highlighted by Macworld, suggests these are distinct configurations rather than internal revisions of the same product.
Both appear to share the same core display features, including ProMotion and HDR support. System files show the J527 model supporting more I/O controllers than J427. The current Studio Display includes three USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port, so the higher-end version could expand that setup with faster connectivity or additional ports. The base model may remain closer to the current configuration.
There are also differences in the audio drivers referenced in the code, pointing to separate speaker systems. Apple's current Studio Display features a six-speaker array with force-cancelling woofers and spatial audio. The J527 model could push that further with upgraded acoustics. The files don't confirm display sizes, but a larger panel for the premium configuration would align with the expanded audio and I/O.
Internally, J427 is labeled as a 2025 product, while J527 carries a 2026 designation. That could indicate staggered launches or reflect earlier development timelines.
