OpenAI is shifting its desktop strategy, planning to combine its ChatGPT app, the Codex coding platform, and its browser into a single "superapp" for Mac and PC users.
The move marks a shift from last year's rollout of multiple standalone apps. According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI executives found that maintaining separate products was stretching engineering teams too thin. In an internal memo, Chief of Applications Fidji Simo said the fragmentation was slowing development. Consolidating everything into a single app is intended to streamline resources and improve focus.
Simo will oversee the transition, working alongside President Greg Brockman on the product and organizational changes. The effort is also aimed at helping OpenAI better position the unified app for enterprise and business customers.
For Mac users, this represents a quick reversal. OpenAI only recently released its dedicated Codex app for macOS, positioning it as a multi-agent command center for developers. That followed the debut of its AI-powered browser, including ChatGPT Atlas. Under the new strategy, these apps will eventually be combined. The mobile ChatGPT app for iOS will remain unchanged.
The unified desktop app will focus heavily on "agentic" capabilities, allowing AI systems to act autonomously on a user's computer to complete multi-step tasks such as writing software or analyzing data. CEO Sam Altman, Chief Research Officer Mark Chen, and Simo have reportedly spent recent weeks reviewing the company's product portfolio to identify areas to deprioritize.
The shift is being treated internally as a "code red," according to an OpenAI spokeswoman, reflecting pressure from rival Anthropic in the enterprise and developer markets. Anthropic has gained traction with tools designed for coding and workplace productivity, intensifying competition between the two companies.
Both companies are also competing for position within Apple's developer ecosystem. Apple recently added support for both Codex and Claude in Xcode 26.3, giving developers the option to use either AI agent inside the IDE.
Over the coming months, OpenAI plans to begin the transition by expanding the capabilities of the Codex app beyond coding into broader productivity tasks. Once those features are in place, the company will merge ChatGPT and its browser into a single unified desktop experience.
