Apple has reached a deal to recruit employees and obtain technology from Ascend.io, a company that developed AI tools for building and managing data pipelines, according to a European Commission disclosure.

The entry, dated June 30, 2026, identifies the business as Ascension Labs, Inc., doing business as Ascend.io. It gives Apple the right to make employment offers to certain employees, receive a non-exclusive license to Ascend's intellectual property, and take ownership of certain patents. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ascend brought data ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and monitoring into one platform. Rather than managing separate tools to move and prepare data for analysis, engineers could build and run the workflow in a shared workspace using SQL or Python.

Its AI agent, Otto, could generate code, write tests, and suggest fixes using context about the pipeline and its dependencies. The platform also tracked changes in source data and transformation logic to avoid unnecessary processing and help teams identify why a workflow had failed.

A short demo published by Ascend in May 2025 shows Otto working alongside a pipeline's code and dependency graph, responding to instructions and proposing changes. The agent could help modify an existing workflow rather than requiring engineers to start from scratch.

Ascend has since replaced its main website with a shutdown notice, saying it is "winding down operations as we prepare for our next great adventure." The message thanks customers and the developer community but does not name Apple or give a service termination date.

The agreement follows Apple's AI audio licensing and hiring deal with Huxe, founded by former NotebookLM developers, and its purchase of assets from music editing startup Samplab. Apple's plans for Ascend's technology have not been announced.
