Blackmagic Launches UltraStudio Express HD With USB4 Support

Blackmagic Design has introduced UltraStudio Express HD, a $565 capture and playback device that connects broadcast and analog video equipment to Macs, Windows PCs, and Linux computers over USB4 or Thunderbolt 4.

A single USB cable handles capture, playback, and power, allowing the unit to run from a laptop battery without a separate power supply. It is designed for work such as archiving tapes from older broadcast decks, monitoring an edit, or bringing an external video source into streaming software.

The connections include 3G-SDI input, analog component and composite video inputs, and balanced analog audio inputs. HDMI output provides monitoring on a TV or projector, while dual SDI outputs support fill and key playback for broadcast graphics. HDMI is output-only, not an input for capturing HDMI sources.

Video support tops out at 1080p60, with 720p, 1080i, and standard-definition formats also supported. The hardware handles 10-bit capture and playback, with compatible software offering formats such as Apple ProRes, DNxHD, and uncompressed video. This is an HD device rather than a 4K capture solution.

RS-422 remote control and a reference input provide deck control and synchronized playback for broadcast setups. Blackmagic describes the new model as a USB4 rebuild of its earlier UltraStudio HD Mini.

"That means they can keep working with the decks, switchers and monitors they've always had, while plugging into the computers they're buying today or in the future," said Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty.

Supported applications include DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Media Composer, and OBS. Blackmagic Media Express is included for capture and playback, and a free Desktop Video SDK lets developers build custom applications.

An optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel adds front-panel buttons and an LCD for video previews, audio meters, timecode, and format information. It is sold separately and is not part of the base configuration.

For higher-resolution workflows, the $1,229 UltraStudio 4K Mini supports capture and playback up to 4K60, adds HDMI input, and includes a built-in LCD. It connects over Thunderbolt 3 and requires AC power, unlike the USB-powered Express HD.

UltraStudio Express HD is available now through Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide. The $565 U.S. starting price excludes local duties and taxes.
