So what is the difference between x264 .AVI and .MP4 file? The codec is the same?
I've been encoding to x264 to AVI and would like to know benefits of MP4?

avi and mp4 are container formats, not codecs like x264. You're really not doing anything other than changing the format of the video

the difference is that you can't play .avi files on iDevices (iTunes. iPhone, Apple TV2 etc....) ;)
