Meta and Oakley are officially teaming up to launch a new category of "Performance AI glasses," engineered for athletes and sports fans. The first product from this collaboration, the Oakley Meta HSTN, was just unveiled, combining the sunglass brand's well-known style with Meta's growing portfolio of wearable AI technology. The new device aims to compete in the emerging smart glasses market, a space Apple is also quietly exploring.
The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses are designed for an active lifestyle, featuring a built-in 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera capable of shooting high-quality photos and 3K video, allowing users to capture their point of view hands-free. The frames also integrate discreet open-ear speakers for listening to music, taking calls, or hearing AI responses without blocking out ambient sound. With an IPX4 water-resistance rating, they are built to handle splashes, sweat, and rain. This launch comes on the heels of recent updates to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, which added features like live translation.
Central to the experience is the built-in Meta AI assistant, which can be activated with the phrase "Hey Meta." Users can ask for real-time information, such as checking the wind speed on a golf course, getting directions, or identifying a song playing nearby. The glasses support music playback from major services including Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music. They also handle calls and messaging from WhatsApp, Messenger, and a user's native phone apps, with Instagram Direct message support coming soon.
Meta has also improved the battery life for the HSTN model, promising up to eight hours of typical use on a single charge. The included charging case can provide up to 40 hours of additional power on the go.
The limited-edition Oakley Meta HSTN will be available for preorder on July 11 for $499, with the standard collection starting at $399 later this summer. The initial launch includes the U.S., Canada, the UK, and several other European countries, with further expansion planned for later in the year.
