AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3: Which Should You Buy?

AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3: Which Should You Buy?

Posted 10 minutes ago by

AirPods 5 make the decision to buy AirPods Pro a little harder. Active Noise Cancellation now starts at $129, and the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add on-ear volume controls and longer battery life. That leaves AirPods Pro 3, at Apple's $249 retail price, with more to justify than simply having ANC.

The strongest reasons to go Pro are the silicone-tip fit, longer listening time between charges, and the extra health features. AirPods 5 are the more affordable choice if you prefer earbuds that rest in your ears without sealing them. Here's how the three options compare.

AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3: Which Should You Buy?

Start With the Fit

This is the decision to make before comparing feature lists. Both AirPods 5 models have an open-ear design with no replaceable silicone tips. If you dislike the plugged-in feeling of in-ear headphones, that may be reason enough to choose them.

AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips in five sizes, from XXS through L. Their foam-infused tips help form a seal and provide passive noise isolation alongside ANC. You can change the tips to find a suitable fit; with AirPods 5, the shape of the earbud itself has to work for your ears.

The Pro earbuds are also heavier: 5.55 grams each, compared with 4.3 grams for AirPods 5. Their case is wider and heavier, too. These are small products either way, but the lighter open-ear design has an appeal that extra features won't necessarily outweigh.

ANC Is Standard, but the Designs Still Matter

Both AirPods 5 configurations include Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness. You don't need the more expensive charging-case package to get those listening modes. Our AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 4 comparison covers that generational change in more detail.

AirPods Pro 3 offer those modes as well, with the additional isolation provided by their ear tips. For someone shopping primarily for flights, commuting, or a noisy workplace, the Pro design is the more compelling starting point. Comfort and a good seal still matter: the better choice is a pair you can wear comfortably for the length of the trip.

All three use the H2 headphone chip and support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Voice Isolation, and studio-quality audio recording. AirPods 5 also adopt a multiport acoustic architecture inspired by Pro 3.

Battery Life Gives Pro 3 a Clear Advantage

Apple rates the $129 AirPods 5 for up to four hours of listening with ANC enabled. The $149 version reaches five hours, while AirPods Pro 3 reach eight hours. For long listening sessions, that is one of the most useful reasons to pay for Pro.

With noise control switched off, the two AirPods 5 versions are rated for up to six and seven hours, respectively. Apple does not list a standard noise-control-off music-playback figure for Pro 3.

Including the charging case, the ANC-on totals are up to 20 hours for standard AirPods 5, 22 hours for the wireless-case version, and 24 hours for Pro 3. Pro's bigger advantage is the length of a single session, rather than a dramatically larger total across repeated recharges. These are Apple's test ratings; settings and use affect actual battery life.

What the Extra $20 Gets You on AirPods 5

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case package changes the earbuds as well as the case. It adds volume swipes on the stems and that extra hour of ANC listening time. The case supports USB-C, an Apple Watch charger, or a Qi-certified charger, and has a speaker for Find My.

Standard AirPods 5 charge over USB-C and lack the stem volume swipe. If you expect to adjust volume frequently or already have a wireless charger beside your bed, the $20 upgrade is easy to justify. We have a separate guide to everything the extra $20 buys.

Pro 3 include volume swipes, USB-C and wireless charging, MagSafe support, a case speaker, and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the case. Both product families carry an IP57 dust, sweat, and water-resistance rating for the earbuds and charging case. They are intended for non-water sports and exercise, not swimming.

The Health Features Are a Pro Reason to Upgrade

AirPods Pro 3 can measure heart rate during workouts with the Fitness app and compatible third-party iPhone apps. Apple rates music listening with workout heart-rate sensing at up to 6.5 hours; its test uses Transparency mode. Neither AirPods 5 configuration includes this sensor.

Pro 3 also support Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection features. Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are intended for adults 18 and older, with Hearing Aid intended for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Supported software and regional availability apply. AirPods 5 do not offer this hearing-health suite.

These capabilities can make Pro 3 the more useful purchase even for someone who isn't chasing the longest battery life. For everyone else, the main reasons to spend more remain the fit, isolation, and longer uninterrupted listening.

Live Translation and Siri Work With Both

Both AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3 support Live Translation with compatible firmware and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone; language and regional restrictions apply. Both can also provide hands-free access to Siri AI on a supported iPhone. Siri AI is currently a beta, with its own device, language, and regional requirements.

Which Should You Buy?

Choose standard AirPods 5 if you want the lowest entry price, prefer an open-ear fit, and are happy charging over USB-C. They already include the important noise-control modes.

For most shoppers who want open-ear AirPods, the $149 wireless-case version is the stronger all-round choice. Volume swipes, longer listening time, and more charging options are worthwhile additions for a $20 retail premium.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want silicone tips, longer ANC listening sessions, workout heart-rate sensing, or hearing-health features. Compare actual retailer prices before deciding: a Pro discount can narrow the $100 retail gap from the higher-end AirPods 5 package.
