Mikecohenn is indeed a friend of Geohot's as photos from his Twitter feed confirm.
Despite the message it doesn't seem to make sense to release a jailbreak when Comex's is around the corner.

I agree that the community is eager. While some developers have a different communication style, they have the hacking skills that few possess. They don't "owe" us anything, and it's understandable that some find the drama annoying. I respect MuscleNerd, planetbeing, and comex. I just sit back and wait for the day that the jailbreak will be released on the iPhone 4.

Thanks dude.
Getting pretty tired of waiting for this jb.
What ya think.
Weekend ? Or will he just keep holding off myself I think there's something that they know that we don't so there not gonna release it until the shit hits the fan

Well judging from MuscleNerd, it looks like it will be here soon.
(Note: This is regarding the unlock)
MuscleNerd: Looks like one version of the iPhone4 unlock fits into just two AT commands... @planetbeing 's loader is awesome :)
So all we have to do now is wait for comex or even iphone_dev at twitter

Here is what I found on twitter...
@KingOfPwnage: do you think geo hot will release his jb before yours? :)
@comex: no because he quit, which sucks because he had accomplished a very cool/difficult exploit (course he won't share)
So much for his release...

I agree totally. Ignore the negativity. If you think the iPhone scene is in a drought, then let it Ra1n. Thanks again to the developers who work for the iPhone community.

First one to release will get "donations".
Probably what it boils down to.

@Will.I.am.not
You're right. The Dev Team would like donations sending to /dev/null

Please be patient. You are getting the jailbreak and unlock for free. If you don't like waiting, there are options like buying pre-jailbroken phones, but it's better to wait for the official releases.

A jailbroken and unlocked 3GS is about $310. Check eBay prices for the iPhone 4 before posting.

Geohot, you're incredibly young and talented. With that said, please consider the impact of release announcements on the community. When you're that talented, many people rely on your tools. If you prefer to stay out of the scene, that's understandable—the Dev-Team and Comex have also proven very reliable.

There is speculation that a release date for the jailbreak could be set for July 31.

July 31 ? Yeah..."I'll buy that for a dollar".....Ever hear of the boy who cried wolf one to many times ? If the devs had something working and are waiting till the 31st it's cause they're reveling in the notoriety, or maybe they've gotta wait till the ink is dry on their DNC contracts with Apple.

Don't believe users pretending to be 'comex', 'MuscleNerd' or 'GeoHot' on this site. All legitimate updates are released via Twitter or the Dev-Team website. There is no confirmed release date for any JB yet. I wish the communication regarding releases was more consistent.

No diss as I am much appreciative of a jailbreak but I'm starting to see where you're coming from. These many updates about a jailbreak or unlock often contain no real news that benefits the users. They should just either release it or keep the status under wraps until it's officially ready. If it's not ready, we can understand. But don't tease the audience multiple times a week. Or just release it; you have a willing audience right here.

The community has different opinions regarding how these jailbreak release updates are communicated.

Comex didn't "announce" his release. That tweet of comex could still mean that it will come out a week from now or maybe more..

Haha - July 21, 2010 at 3:00pm
Ya all comex said was he wasn't waiting for 4.1. Which could just mean he will keep working with what he has done so far. so even after 4.1 officially comes out he could still be working on the 4.0.x jailbreak. Still, I hope it's sooner than later. As for geohot, I don't really care what his personality is, I'm not looking to be his friend, if he wants to release something then COOL

There's a few companies that handle releases much like the current JB devs. Tease ya with a little tid-bit, whet your appetite, dangle the carrot, wait till there's a feverish pitch and then put out a limited release. Tell me this doesn't remind you of the release histories of Apple, Google and yes, even Microsoft....

Like most of us I am (impatiently) waiting for an iOS a jailbreak for my iPhone 4. However I'm very confused about the blobs. I've jailbroken my previous iPhones many times before I don't recall ever having been told about backing up these blobs. What exactly is the purpose of doing that and does everyone have to do it? I don't want to unlock my phone just jailbreak.

paul - July 21, 2010 at 11:56am
It really has nothing to do with the jb or an unlock. it just allows you to downgrade your firmware once apples closed their signing window (4.0 was closed when 4.0.1 was released) In regards to what Comex said he just making sure everyone has them backed up because apple timely releases updates after a jb release. So its to protect those who 'accidentally' upgrade and loose their jb. they can always downgrade and jb with their blobs saved.

Furrnace - July 21, 2010 at 12:47pm
Yeah iName, I was confused at first too but I think I understand it now. It's a pretty good idea. I'm glad they're doing it now. I don't know how well it works yet since I haven't had to try it. For example though, I cannot downgrade back to 3.1.2 from iOS 4.0 very easily and if you save your blobs, then it's apparently very easy through iTunes. Otherwise you get an error when trying to restore. This is correct, right paul?

88ender88 - July 21, 2010 at 10:06pm
almost. you can not downgrade at ALL without going to firmware umbrella and having the blobs to go back to. so if you mess up somehow, or for whatever reason your phone gets/needs to be restored you'll be stuck having to use new firmware that will most likely not be jailbreak/unlockable. at least for some unknowable time.
it's a VERY easy streamlined process that would take less time to complete than it has typing your questions. and then you'd be nice and safe. :)
if you don't back up before a new firmware release, you will no longer be able to get apple to sign for the current one so will be SOL

Are GeoHot's jailbreaks untethered or tethered?
0
DanCJ - July 21, 2010 at 4:45pm
I can't say for sure about any upcoming jailbreak, but my 3.1.2 jailbroken phone uses Geohot's JB and it's untethered.

Make it rain now!! we are in a drought of waiting for the jailbreak!!!

Animal - July 21, 2010 at 11:34am
I saved my 4.0 blobs onto my PC but not Cydia. Is that a problem ?
Should I update to 4.0.1 and save them to cydia ready for the JB ?
0
Paul - July 21, 2010 at 11:57am
you dont need to upgrade to save the most current blob. just download tinyumbrella and click advanced and select 4.0.1 since thats all that apple is signing now. and it should send them to cydia and have a copy on your computer.
