Check out this video comparing the speaker volume and sound of the new iPhone 17 Pro Max with the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Our testing showed a slight decrease in overall speaker volume for the iPhone 17 Pro Max when measured from the bottom. This year, the new model measured at 102 dBA, a bit lower than last year's iPhone 16 Pro Max, which measured 103.8 dBA. When measured from the side, however, the iPhone 17 Pro Max registered 93 dBA, up from 90.8 dBA for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The different measurements could be attributed to changes in the speaker design. A recent iPhone 17 Pro teardown revealed a substantially larger earpiece speaker, which can affect how sound is projected from the device.
Note that this test focuses on maximum volume output measured in decibels, not sound quality. Both devices were tested on the latest public release of iOS.
