Spotify is increasing the monthly cost of its Premium subscription for customers in the United States. The streaming giant has begun notifying subscribers that the price for an individual plan is rising by one dollar, pushing the monthly fee from $11.99 to $12.99.
According to emails sent to current customers, the new pricing takes effect on billing dates starting in February. While the notification specifically highlights the U.S. increase, Spotify also confirmed that Premium subscribers in Estonia and Latvia will receive updates regarding price changes over the next month. New subscribers will see the updated pricing immediately when signing up on the company's website.
This adjustment places Spotify's individual tier above that of its primary competitor, Apple Music, which currently costs $10.99 per month. The move comes as Apple recently reported that its Services division hit record highs, with Apple Music reaching all-time peaks in both listenership and subscribers.
Spotify says these occasional updates reflect the value the service delivers and allow it to keep investing in the product experience. The company emphasized that the changes also help it continue benefiting artists and creators.
The price hike follows the recent rollout of several new features for the paid tier. Last month, the company expanded music videos to Premium users in the U.S. and Canada, allowing listeners to switch between audio and official music videos seamlessly. The service also recently gained another iOS-friendly feature, as Algoriddim added Spotify support to its popular djay app on iPhone and iPad.
Subscribers who do not wish to continue their membership at the new price point can cancel their plan at any time through their account settings page.
