Amazon has updated Alexa to allow users to make calls and send messages on tablets, including the iPad, reports Engadget.

You no longer need to hang around an Echo speaker to make free calls and messages with Alexa. As of now, you can use Alexa to place calls (including video calls) and send messages from Android tablets, iPads and of course Amazon's own Fire models.

The Drop In feature also works between tablets and other Echo devices in your home.

Amazon's Alexa app lets you call numbers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. You can do this from the Calling & Messaging tab.

Supported devices include:
● Echo
● Echo Dot
● Echo Show
● Echo Spot
● Echo Plus
● 4th Generation and later Fire tablets with the Alexa app
● Android tablets with the Alexa app and software version 5.0 or higher
● iOS tablets with the Alexa app and software version 9.0 or higher
● Compatible Android and iOS smartphones with the Alexa app
